A Los Angeles man deliberately rammed through a group of sheriff’s recruits with his vehicle, leaving several in critical condition, per the NY Post.
Nicholas Gutierrez, 22, was reportedly driving an SUV down the wrong side of the street when he hit the gas and plowed into a group of 75 police recruits, police said. The incident occurred around 6:30 a.m during the recruit’s morning jog. According to investigators, Gutierrez was going at a speed of 30 to 40 mph. Witnesses say, they heard Gutierrez’s vehicle
moments before impact, LA County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said.
“There were so many bodies scattered everywhere in different states of injury that it was pretty traumatic for all individuals involved,”
Villanueva told the outlet. At least 25 recruits were wounded, five critically injured, and some even lost limbs, according to the sheriff’s office. Some suffered
like loss of limbs and head trauma, Villanueva said.
Gutierrez was taken into custody and later released until investigators arack up more evidence against him. According to a spokesperson for the LA County Sheriff’s Department,
“California law bars authorities from holding a suspect in custody for more than 48 hours without presenting the case to prosecutors,”
