58 year old Jesse Porter became a weapons instructor for trainees after retiring from Washington DC Metropolitan Police Department, where he worked as a lieutenant for 33 years. He is now being accused of accidentally shooting another officer during training at Anacostia Neighborhood Library.
According to Insider, Porter pulled out a semiautomatic weapon from his holster and accidentally shot and killed a 25 year old fellow officer while he was “joking around.” He was then arrested and charged with involuntary manslaughter, but was released without bail on Friday.
DC Police Chief Robert Contee said at a press conference that he isn’t certain why a live weapon was used during a training session, but referred to it as “not good practice.” He has yet to comment on the leniency of Porter’s repercussions.
