NYPD Banned From NYC Pride Until At Least 2025, Gay Officers Left Feeling “Disheartened

As the world begins to open up that means festivals and parades are coming back just in time for summer. One of the biggest being the pride parade and NYPD are being left out of the festivities as they will be banned from this year’s celebration and more years to come.

Organizers of New York City’s pride events have said on Saturday they are banning police and the presence of other law enforcement from marching in annual parade until at least 2025. According to KTLA, NYC pride issued a statement saying that officers should, “acknowledge their harm and to correct course moving forward.”

The group went on to further say, “The sense of safety that law enforcement is meant to provide can instead be threatening, and at times dangerous, to those in our community who are most often targeted with excessive force and/or without reason.” There will still be protection during the annual event but it will be provided by community-based security and first responders.

Detective Sophia Mason, spokeswoman for the department said, “The idea of officers being excluded is disheartening and runs counter to our shared values of inclusion and tolerance.” The parade is scheduled for June, where some events will be in person, and others held virtually.
