Michelle Obama Admits That She Straightened Her Hair Because Americans Weren’t Ready For A First Lady With Braids
Former First Lady, Michelle Obama, has opened up about how she chose to wear her hair during her time at the white house. She expressed that she chose to straighten her natural hair instead of rocking braids so America can adapt to having a black family in the White House, reports The Washington Post.
The former First Lady said in Washington D.C at her book event,
“Nope, they’re not ready for it.”
She mentioned that she did this all in an attempt to avoid disputes so that the former president, Barack Obama, can focus on his presidential duties.
She added,
“Let me keep my hair straight… let’s get health care passed.”
Michelle Obama mentioned that often, black women, like herself, find it less stressful to surrender to white beauty standards by straightening their hair and choosing not to wear their hair in braids, locks, or afros; however, she now flaunts her braids.
“We deal with it, the whole thing about, ‘Do you show up with your natural hair?.. That’s the African American experience.”
