A horrendous fire broke out this afternoon at a high-rise apartment in the Bronx. Unfortunately it has left behind many fatalities and officials say the death total could rise.
Authorities say the fire started on the third floor of the 19-story high-rise building at 333 East 181st Street in the Tremont section of the Bronx just before 11 a.m. Sunday. FDNY says that the fire started when the space heater malfunctioned in a bedroom. A door had been left open in the apartment where the fire began which eventually led it to spread through the building.
According to Commissioner Daniel Nigro, Firefighters “found victims on every floor and were taking them out in cardiac and respiratory arrest.” Some of the residents were trapped inside of their apartments before being able to be saved by firefighters.
Commissioner Nigro totals the incident out to at least 63 people injured from the fire, 13 people with life threatening injuries, 9 people in serious condition and 22 people with non-life threatening injuries.
