Man Sentenced To Life Behind Bars After Fatally Beating His 10-Week-Old Son, Reports Say

Tarrant County Sheriff's Office

A man from Texas, Joseph Matthew Welborn, has been sentenced to a life term behind bars in connection to the fatal beating of his son, who was only 10 weeks old. The Tarrant County Criminal District Attorney’s Office informed Fox that the 31-year-old pleaded guilty to injury to a child causing serious bodily injury. Fox 4 reported that he initially faced a capital murder charge.

The child’s mother and grandfather discovered the 10-week-old boy, Christian,

“unresponsive, pale, and unconscious”

as the boy reportedly suffered from

“blunt force trauma to his head,”

reports Fox. The discovery was made when the child’s mother and grandfather returned home from shopping. Reports added that they left the infant home with Welborn back on Dec. 21, 2018.

Christian was later transported to the hospital where he was declared deceased. An autopsy revealed that he had two skull fractures. When the father was questioned by officials, he told cops multiple clashing stories, which included blaming his son, alleging that his 4-year-old son dropped the infant. A medical examiner verified that Christian’s wounds weren’t due to a fall and confirmed that the infant was struck up to three times, reports the Morning News.

“The last thing that Christian saw was his dad grabbing him and violently slamming his head… This is about giving Christian a voice. It was stolen by his own flesh and blood, his father. This sweet, innocent little baby deserved better,”

Katie Owens told the jury.
