A New York City man was charged with smuggling three Burmese pythons in his pants at the U.S- Canadian border, Insider reports.

Calvin Bautista, 36, of Queens allegedly hid the three Burmese pythons snakes in his pants as he traveled on a bus that crossed into northern New York on July 15, 2018, Associated Press reported. The importation of Burmese pythons is considered

“injurious to human beings,”

according to an international treaty and by the federal regulations list.

Bautista was charged on Tuesday in Albany on the federal smuggling charge and released as he awaits trial, according to a news release from the office of U.S. Attorney Carla B. Freedman.

The Department of Justice said in a statement that although the charges filed against Bautista are merely accusations, if found guilty, Bautista could face the maximum sentence of 20 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.
