Man Charged After Reportedly Throwing Two Kittens Out Of Moving Vehicle On Highway

THE MONROE COUNTY SHERIFF’S OFFICE

29-year-old Diego Torres Ruiz is currently facing two counts of animal cruelty after he allegedly tossed two kittens out of a moving car last month. Ruiz was accused of tossing the animals out of the window while on US 1 in Florida on November 28, according to a statement released by officials on Facebook.

A motorist who witnessed the incident gave officials Ruiz’s tag number, reports PEOPLE. The witness added that the incident caused other drivers to become distracted and swerve in an attempt to refrain from hitting the kittens. The man was stopped and arrested not too long after the incident; however, he was released from custody when officials were unable to locate the cats and he denied having any memory of committing the crime.

Later on in the day, one cat was discovered dead after being hit by a car. The second cat rushed into the woods and was later located by a Rain Barrel Village employee. The cat suffered from minor injuries and was later adopted by the initial witness who saw the kittens being tossed out of the vehicle. The witness also pointed out Ruiz’s car as the suspect’s car.

According to PEOPLE,

“Ruiz is scheduled to be arraigned on Jan. 3. It is not clear if Ruiz has legal representation to comment on his behalf.
