Lizzo Took Her Family To Therapy To Explain That She Would Be Using Profanity In Her Songs, Mom Says

Lizzo’s exuberance and free spirit are no surprise to her mother however, profanity was something she had to get used to. In an exclusive interview with Vanity Fair Lizzo’s mother, Sharie Johnson-Jefferson, revealed that Lizzo took the family to therapy to explain that she will be using profanity in her music.
Her mother, who raised Lizzo in a religious home, told the magazine,
“when she started out, she didn’t use profanity at all. She got the family together, took us to a therapy session, and explained to us that she would be using profanity in her songs.”
She went on to say,
“she prepared us for it. She was always a free spirit and didn’t like clothes, so that was not a surprise at all. She is doing what she loves to do, making her own decisions, and really helping people along the way. I’m so proud of her.”
Lizzo has been candid in the past about her religious upbringing. In an interview with James Corden’s
“Carpool Karaoke”,
she reflected on growing up in church.
“For the first 10 years of my life, when we lived in Detroit, I was in The Church of God in Christ,” Lizzo explained. “When you have that faith, it is strict with the kind of music you listen to. We didn’t listen to secular music. It was devil music.”
