CVS & Walgreens Are Responsible For Majority Of COVID Vaccine Waste

CVS and Walgreens are responsible for over 70% of wasted COVID vaccines, data from the CDC shows.

The organization has been tracking doses and reports that as of late March, 182,874 vaccines were wasted. CVS accounted for nearly half of those, and Walgreens was responsible for 21% of them. Most of the wasted doses (60%) were Pfizer vaccines.

Our goal has always been ensuring every dose of vaccine is used,” Walgreens company spokesperson Kris Lathan stated.

Experts are trying to figure out why doses are being wasted and make adjustments to the rollout process to try and curb waste. Transportation issues, refrigeration problems, and appointment no-shows all contribute.

What could happen is you get people who just decide: ‘You know what? I don’t need my vaccine today. I’m not going to show up.’ Well, now we’re scrambling to find somebody to take the vaccine, because we don’t want to waste it,”  said Remi Graber, a registered nurse working vaccination sites.

The doses have a short lifespan. Once the vial is punctured, it has to be used within a number of hours in order to be effective.

Clique, how do you feel about vaccines being wasted?
