Sadly, a teen boy, who was fatally shot at a Juneteenth celebration in Washington, D.C., was heard
“screaming out for his mom,”
per bystanders. According to WTTG, eyewitnesses told the news station that the unidentified 15-year-old boy was heard yelling in distraught after he was struck. A witness, Daniel Dyson, told the station
“it’s hurtful to hear that, man. And no one was able to help him. To see him go. It bothers me. All of this that’s going on here it bothers me. And it needs to come to a stop. It really does.”
The bystander also remembered witnessing an officer get struck by a bullet. She recalled,
“I was sitting next to a cop. Next thing you know, shots rang out. He did not want to stay down. He proceeded on. He was shot in the leg. And he kept moving. He went to the fire. He did not run away.”
During the unfortunate incident, an officer was confirmed to have gotten shot in the leg, according to DC Police Chief Robert Contee. The police chief noted that the officer is expected to make a full recovery. Two adults were also struck during the encounter.
Contee added,
“When you have large gatherings in a dense area, all it takes is one person introducing a gun to the situation that makes it deadly. In this case, unfortunately a 15-year-old lost his life.”
Officials are still seeking the gunman. Muriel Bowser, Washington, DC’s mayor, believes the organizers of the event, the Moechella festival, should be held responsible. Authorities added that the organizers didn’t have a valid permit, according to the New York Post.
