Before Pop Smoke’s death, he seemed to have gotten in a bit of trouble with NYPD, and they wanted him to snitch on the Crips.
Shortly before his untimely murder, the NYPD was hounding Pop to give up information on the notorious street gang, pressing him for information about a series of shootings in Brooklyn, according to the New York Post. The rapper was initially taken in by police for a stolen Rolls Royce in December 2019, but that led to him being questioned about a shooting that happened months earlier.
The “Dior” emcee refused to give up any intel and his lawyer Peter Frankel said “ Any conversation with Pop about cooperation was a very short one. It’s something he would never entertain doing.” All in all, that led to the federal charge which Pop’s lawyer also said may have been a tactic to get him to rat.
Four people were charged in the killing of Pop Smoke in July.
